The program was closed with a competition announcement and awards to recognize and celebrate their hard work and outstanding achievements.
The closing ceremony along with the competition winner announcement was held on September 28th, 2022 through Zoom meeting, attended by the representatives from the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Head of Provincial Education Board of East Java and Surabaya, Head of Energy and Mineral Resources Board of East Java, ETP-UNOPS Indonesia Country Manager, IIEE Executive Director, Executive Secretary and team, competition judges, 24 Energy Managers, and 120 Duta Hemat Energi from 24 schools. Those schools are 8 elementary schools (SDN Dr. Sutomo V/327, SDN Jajartunggal III/452, SDN Simomulyo I, SDN Kertajaya, SDN Pakis V, SDN Tanah Kali Kedinding V/579, SDN Jeruk I/469, and SDN Margorejo I/403), 8 junior high schools (SMPN 39 Surabaya, SMPN 51 Surabaya, SMPN 52 Surabaya, SMPN 63 Surabaya, SMP Kristen Aletheia Surabaya, SMP Taman Pelajar Surabaya, SMP Wachid Hasjim 5, and SMP Kemala Bhayangkari 6), and 8 senior high schools (SMAN 4 Surabaya, SMAN 8 Surabaya, SMAN 11 Surabaya, SMAN 15 Surabaya, SMKN 2 Surabaya, SMKN 3 Surabaya, SMKN 5 Surabaya, and SMK Assa’adah).

The event titled “Closing Peningkatan Kesadaran Efisiensi Energi dan Konservasi Energi di Sektor Pendidikan serta Lomba Hemat Energi di Provinsi Jawa Timur” started with greetings by Intan Permata from IIEE as the host to welcome the invited guests and all participants, inform the agenda of the day, then inviting all attendees to sing the national anthem, Indonesia Raya to formally mark the opening.

Director of Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Ir. Hendra Iswahyudi, M.Si. continued the event with his speech. Through his speech, he hopes that the participants will earn the program benefits and disseminate the awareness in school, family, and surrounding communities, especially in East Java and gain fruitful experience from this program not only to compete but also always to implement real actions for sustainable energy development and management to support Indonesia’s vision to reduce carbon emission by 29% in 2030 and Net Zero Emission in 2060.

The next remark was delivered by Drs. Hari Indarjoko, M.Pd. as a representative from the Education Office of East Java Province. He stated that this kind of program is needed as schools in East Java sometimes consume excessive electricity and the program itself has brought positive results for the participants in terms of energy-saving awareness and behavior. He also gave his support and thanked the program for its impact on students in East Java.

ETP-UNOPS Indonesia Country Manager, Aang Darmawan was the next person to deliver his speech regarding the program. He has witnessed the participants’ enthusiasm from elementary, junior high, and senior high school students in their action to save energy and this has brought trust that the younger generation could participate in actualizing Indonesia’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the future. He has stated that the global issue right now is about transitioning from high-emission energy to energy that produces lower emission, such as renewable energy, and there is one energy transitioning activity that people sometimes forget even though it plays a significant role, which is the energy-saving action. ETP-UNOPS support in this program through IIEE is a commitment from the international community on how this energy-saving action could bring the impact to reducing emission in the future and stated that ETP-UNOPS believe that this program will be sustainable. At last, he thanked the participants’ commitment throughout the program and said that ETP-UNOPS is ready to continue energy conservation efforts in Indonesia.
The Achievements

After the speeches and remarks, the following agenda was the program implementation report delivered by Didi Hasan Putra, IIEE Executive Director. In his presentation, Mr. Didi explained the program’s purpose and participants, how the activities were carried out from the training module development, program socialization and launching, awareness and capacity-building activities, competition, to the monev (monitoring and evaluation) throughout the program by IIEE, KESDM, and ETP-UNOPS.
Electricity Consumption Decrease Total Avoided CO2 Emission
Mr. Didi then explained the program’s achievement during the past three months of training and monev. The participants successfully decreased an accumulation of 69,398 kWh of electricity consumption at schools, almost one-third reduction from the average consumption when the program started. There is also another achievement where these 24 schools have avoided 60.4 tons of CO₂ emissions in accumulation, with the most significant reduction happening in July 2022 as much as 32.4 tons of CO₂ emissions. Our 120 energy ambassadors have influenced 20,295 people to participate in energy-saving activities directly and have spread awareness to 93,803 people indirectly through school and social media campaigns. In total, 124,098 people have been influenced and engaged by the ambassadors. Mr. Didi then showcased the program’s pictures to end his presentation.

The pilot project of Duta Hemat Energi program in East Java has officially ended with impressive outcomes from the ambassadors and energy managers. We are optimistic that 120 Duta Hemat Energi and 24 energy managers will continue to bring the spirit of spreading awareness and implementing energy-saving behavior wherever they go and expect that all the 24 participating schools will maintain this program in the following years to come.
In the future, we aim to create and train more ambassadors and reach broader regions to spread awareness of energy conservation and energy-saving habits among youths. To make this happen, we invite institutions and companies to support this program through CSR funds or other funding mechanisms.
